Commentary: In Spring 1892 Annan had toured North Holland in the company of D. Y. Cameron visiting Alkmaar, Amsterdam, Haarlem, Utrecht, Zaandam, Zandvoort and possibly the Elbe. Later in the year they held a joint exhibition of Cameron’s etchings and Annan’s photogravures at Annan’s new gallery in Glasgow. The photographs in The Magazine, some of which had formed the basis of the photogravures in the exhibition, all illustrate the text which describes a typical working day in the lives of the villagers of Zandvoort.
