Commentary: Robert Browning (18121889) was one of the major English poets of the 19th century, noted for his dramatic monologues. Of the works mentioned by Keppie: Sordello (1840) was a long experimental poem which baffled the critics; Columbe’s Birthday (1844), was a 5 act drama; Men and Women (1855), was a 2 volume collection of shorter poems; The Ring and the Book, published in 4 volumes (18689) was a long poem consisting of a series of blank verse monologues spoken by the principals in a 17th century murder trial. Algernon Charles Swinburne (18371909) was a leading English poet and critic.
