Date: 1894
Inscription: 2 drawings, pen and ink on paper, 17 x 10.2 cm, attached to page, inscribed top “WINTER REIGN’TH OER[sic] THE LAND. / DECR. / 1893; and tailpiece, pen and ink on paper, 5.8 x 5.8 cm, inscribed left “FINIS” and signed and dated bottom “1894 J. M. AITKEN.”
Keywords: trees; symbolism; seasons, autumn; winter; figures; women; plants; art nouveau
Material: Pen and ink
Commentary: The two illustrations, both containing a female figure and tree motifs, seem to be related. The umbrellalike plant forms in both drawings possibly represent fir trees: covered in snow in the top illustration, which was probably prepared for the Autumn 1893 number. The lower illustration, with its depiction of wind, represents Autumn rather than winter.
