Commentary: The poem is based on the legend of King Midas who had ass’s ears. The Queen does not figure in the original story but has been substituted for Midas’s barber who discovered his secret and whispered it into a hole which he then filled in. The retailing of Midas’s secret to the reeds comes from the later tale of Portzmach King of Brittany, who had horse’s ears.
