Commentary: Raeburn’s illustration, depicting Shakespeare’s tragic heroine on her way to her death, serves as a frontispiece to the essay by Jane Keppie. Ophelia’s youthful face has a trancelike expression when all around her is light, joyous, and Springlike. Despite the rather naive drawing style, and partly because of it, the artist has conveyed her subject’s state of mind with a fair degree of success.
