Title: The Descent of Night

Date: 1894

Inscription: Drawing, pencil and watercolour, 24 x 17.2 cm, attached to dark green paper, captioned beneath on right, “The Descent of Night. / C. R. Mackintosh.

Keywords: symbolism; night; birds; women; figures

Material: Pencil and watercolour

Commentary: The naked winged female figure is probably an anthropomorphic personification of night overshadowing the setting sun, while the birds in the foreground seek a roost where they might sleep. The figure is similar to the central one in Mackintosh’s design for the Glasgow School of Art Club’s Diploma of Honour, c.1894 in the collection of the Glasgow School of Art.
